Rags to riches stories of celebrated movie stars are of great interest. It seems that beauty and personality combine to create an illusion that their lives - when compared to their impoverished upbringing - are somehow made complete by wealth and fame. When the contradiction between the illusion and their authentic self becomes too great, unhappiness and mental anguish follows. The story of Esther, the real-life heroine celebrated in the book named after her in the Old Testament, has many of these hall marks.
