The huge piece of marble that the statue of David was carved from had been stored in the basement of a church for a long time. The marble, it seems, was of poor quality.   It had already been carved on two different occasions by two different sculptors. It seems that both sculptors had stopped sculpturing the marble because of its poor quality, faulty seams and brittleness. Michaelangelo, however, could see its potential. Where others had seen only faults Michaelangelo  could see its pontential for beauty.
