Pentecost Prayer

Lord Jesus, as God's Spirit came down and rested upon you,
May the same Spirit rest on us,
Bestowing his sevenfold gifts.

Grant us the gift of understanding,
By which your precepts may enlighten our minds.
Grant us right judgment, by which we may follow
in your footsteps on the path of righteousness.
Grant us courage, - in the face of the unknown and to
ward off the enemy's attacks.
Grant us knowledge,
by which we can distinguish good from evil.
Grant us reverence,
by which we may acquire compassionate hearts.
Grant us wonder –

at your goodness, and how wonderfully you’ve gifted us.
Grant us wisdom,
that we may tastefully the life-giving sweetness of your love.

You startled the disciples when you sent your spirit among them with a mighty rushing wind and flames of fire. Renew us, oh God of grace and compassion that we may see what you would have us do and be.

We know there are many needs in your world today. We are concerned about people around the world who are in areas of conflict and turmoil. Our hearts go out to the and we lift them up to you now, in the silence -   (pause)

Our leaders and leaders throughout the world need your wisdom. Give them discernment and courage and honesty. Help them make right decisions, honouring your precepts.

Father, we know of people who need your healing touch – physically, spiritually, and regarding conflicts and concerns deep inside that they are struggling with. We bring them to you now, in the silence . . .   (pause)

Your Spirit, God, works in our weakness until we are aflame with your love and power. Fill the hearts of your faithful with living fire, that we may set the world ablaze.

As we celebrate the birthday of your church today, may we too feel your empowerment. Encircle us with your love, as we pray the prayer your Son taught us –

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
